Sarawak CM should be Dayak, says native group

KUCHING, June 6 — Sarawak Dayak Graduates Association (SDGA) president Dr Dusit Jaul said today the Sarawak chief minister should come from Dayak community as they are the majority the state.

Pointing out that the Dayaks comprising ethnic Iban, Bidayuh, Kayan, Kenyah, Kelabit and other native groups form about 60 per cent of Sarawak’s 2.6 million population, he said the community was already not being fairly represented in the state assembly.

“It is nothing wrong for us to insist on a Dayak chief minister to come from the community,” he said when asked to clarify on his earlier speech at a book launch.

He added that, at present, the community is underrepresented in the state civil service, statutory bodies, government-linked companies and in the federal departments in Sarawak.

In his speech earlier, he said the community should combine its political clout to have greater say in Sarawak, but said the entire group must be united in this ambition.

“The political fragmentation of Dayaks in Sarawak is the weakest point, though they form the majority race in Sarawak, they are unable to unite under a single political party,” he stressed.

One reason for the fragmentation, he said, is that there is a lack of unifying leader and philosophy to unite the Dayak community.

The current chief minister is Tan Sri Adenan Satem, who is Malay-Melanau.
