Inferno at Rembau Farm: 11 Coops Burn, Over 600,000 Layer Hens Lost, Massive Egg Supply Blow

  May 18, 2025

A massive blaze destroyed 11 egg-laying chicken coops at Ladang Bukit Bertam, along the Linggi–Lubuk Cina road in Rembau, Negeri Sembilan, at about 10:40 a.m. on 18 May 2025. The wrought-iron-and-timber structures sat on roughly 10 acres of farmland; all were engulfed so quickly that more than 600,000 layer hens perished before help could arrive. Acting Rembau district police chief DSP Azmi Ali said the farm manager was alerted by workers who saw flames suddenly racing through a coop. An emergency call brought fire-and-rescue teams from Kota, Rembau, Teluk Kang, and Rantau. Fire-fighters succeeded in containing the inferno and prevented it from spreading to nearby facilities, and no human injuries were reported. All 90 farm employees were mustered to a safe zone while crews battled the blaze.

Investigators are still calculating the exact financial loss—expected to be substantial given the herd size and damage to shed infrastructure—and are probing the fire’s origin. Early estimates put the egg-production loss alone in the millions of ringgit. Authorities emphasized that a thorough forensic examination of electrical wiring, heating equipment, and possible accelerants will be conducted. The tragedy underscores the vulnerability of large-scale livestock operations to fire and the importance of stringent safety measures and rapid-response plans to protect animal welfare and livelihoods.
