Rapid Penang launches dynamic driving simulator

NIBONG TEBAL: Rapid Penang has launched a new dynamic driving simulator to hone the manoeuvring skills of its bus captains. Prasarana Malaysia Berhad group managing director Azmi Abdul Aziz said the objective of the simulator enabled the bus captains to learn and adapt the driving skills needed for handling stage bus. "The simulator is part of our efforts to create highly skilled bus captains. "It refines the skills of bus captains, with objects and malfunction scenarios inserted into the display for them to deal with the difficult situations,"

Azmi said yesterday. He added the dynamic simulator would allow bus captains to be more confident, as they will put their skills to the test in dealing with engine malfunctions and pedestrian crossings. He was speaking to reporters after Local Government and Traffic Management Committee chairman Chow Kon Yeow launched the state-of-the-art simulator at Rapid Penang bus academy here. Azmi said unlike the static simulator, the dynamic simulator provides actual bus routes used by the buses and actual movement that a driver would experience while helping the vehicle.

There are three sets of dynamic driving simulators in the Penang academy. The company is the second public transport entity in the country to have the advanced simulator after Rapid KL. In another development, Azmi said the company would assess its ridership at the end of the year before fixing a date to launch its double decker bus service.

He said the service would start in Kuala Lumpur and the Klang Valley. "High ridership in Penang will warrant double decker buses to be deployed in selected routes. "There is no specific timeline to start using double decker buses in Penang and we will decide if the demand is feasible first," he said.
