Tesco to trial DIY checkout in Johor next

Following the introduction of its self checkout counter pilot programme since early June at its IOI City, Putrajaya outlet, Tesco Stores (Malaysia) Sdn Bhd plans to launch the same system at Tesco KSL City outlet in Johor next.

“We have seen a significant percentage of our customers respond to the self checkout system and have received positive feedback,” said chief executive officer Datuk Georg Fischer.

He said outlets are still at the learning stages for the self checkout system and after the roll out at the KSL City outlet by year end, Tesco Malaysia will study the responses before making any further decision on a nationwide rollout.

“The cost for one self checkout point is RM10,000. But of course it’s an IT investment and investment into our customers.

“We’ve implemented such systems in our UK outlets previously and our customers there quite enjoy it. We hope that our Malaysian customers will like it too,” added Fischer.

The retailer today launched its “Double Savings, Double the Benefits” promotion in partnership with Petron Malaysia – a Hari Raya Puasa campaign which looks to give away RM8 million worth of vouchers.

In this promotion Tesco Clubcard and Petron Miles Card members will receive RM3 Petron fuel vouchers for every RM100 spent in a single receipt at any Tesco hypermarket. while for every RM50 spent in a single receipt for fuel at Petron stations will see them receiving RM1.50 Tesco vouchers.
“This is by far our biggest Ramadan and Hari Raya campaign yet, and the first of its kind for Tesco, working with Petron,” said Fischer.

In addition to the promotion, Tesco customers – who are also Petron Miles cardholders – will have a chance to be among the 10 grand prize winners of the “5 Minute Hypermarket Sweep at Tesco”. - The Rakyat Post
