Water tariff in Negri Sembilan goes up

Syarikat Air Negri Sembilan Sdn Bhd (Sains) has implemented an upward adjustment of the water tariff involving commercial, industrial and government account holders from May 1.

Menteri Besar Mohamad Hasan said the increase did not affect domestic account holders.

"Although more than 70 per cent of the accounts in the state are domestic account holders, they are exempted as we do not want them to be burdened.

"The Negri Sembilan State Government and Sains decided on the adjustment after receiving the approval of the National Water Services Commission (Span) and the federal government.

"I am confident the commercial, industrial and government sectors can afford to accommodate the increase in tariff," he told a media conference after launching a new water pipeline from the Sawah Raja water treatment plant to the Kampung Sawah Raja junction, Kota, near Rembau, today. Also present was Sains director, Wan Rasdi Wan Ismail.

He said the decision to raise the water tariff was made after taking into account numerous factors, and the fact that the tariff had not been raised since 2002.

On the installation of the 5.25km pipeline, he said it was a part of the Sawah Raja Phase 2 water treatment plant project.

He said the pipeline was aimed at ending the water rationing faced by residents in Rembau and Tampin from last year until today.

"The work to instal the MS 900 mm type of pipes took three months and was fully completed last month. SAINS is forced to implement the project to help supply water from phase 1 of the Sawah Raja water treatment plant to Rembau and part of Tampin after finding no increase of the water level at the Gemencheh Dam," he said.
